    Hey,

This is Roberta, the News Editor. You are a good write, and I would like for you to write a news article on volunteering for the Miami-Dade Elections Department.

The Elections (Presidential) will be held on January 29, 2008. It’s a school day, and students who decide to go will be considered on a field trip, and will receive community service hours.

I know that you can get good quotes to make this sound even more exciting. Fisrt, ask Mr. Weiss for the e-mail sent to him from Mr. Devarona about the “Election Day Volunteers”. You can interview Mr. DeVarona, and also ask him who else would be able to give you useful quotes, the Principal and see what she thinks about it, Ms. Rivero, the Activities Director, social studies/government teachers (such as Mr. Simon and Mr. Spiegelman), and various students to see if any of them think it is worthwhile.

Please have the article done by Thursday, October 24th, the latest Friday. If you still need administrator quotes beceause of time restrictions, just make sure you have it no later than Monday.

We’re on a really tight schedule to get the print version of the paper out.

Thanks! If you need any help, let me know.

    Helllooo!

OK, if you talked to Mr. Weiss then no problem. Just let me know when you have the AP article and the elections article up on your blog so that Alex and I can edit and account for them.

How is the election article coming along? It doesn’t have to be super long, just enough to get the readers the facts and some good, interesting quotes. Elections are a big deal since they are only a year away.

In fact, if you want to make your article a little longer, you can also include a little background info on the elections process and whatnot, so readers will know where this is coming from and why it is important.

Good luck, and nice meeting you! :-)

    Hello News Staff Writers –

We got the first issue out. Whoo! The next print issue is supposed to be out around the middle of January. Before then, we still need to come up with ideas for the online version. This is the hard thing about being a news writer – you can’t really “plan” news. Since we can’t predict the future, it’s kind of hard to pull news stories from out of the air. So what we need to do is get some leads or “beats” about what’s going on around school. I’m going to talk to Mr. Weiss and people in the office on Monday so that we can get some news stories to write about.

Construction is kind of “played out”, as is the FCAT. We already wrote about Staph, and there are no other big scares at school.

There’s going to be an Attendance Pep Rally on the 16th. That’s news that can go up on the site, maybe. And someone could write about the Miami Beach election results.

Anyway, I did come up with three ideas for the January issue, you can check them out on my blog. Maybe they’ll give you inspiration and you guys can work on an investigative journalism piece of your own about a school policy or something like that.

But don’t worry, guys! We’ll get out of this rut. I’ll write you again on Monday, and hopefully I’ll have some leads on potential news stories.

    Roberta

P.S. Sorry about the length of this note. I realize that it’s long and I sometimes babble. :-)

    Hey Alessia-

I just heard on the news last night that Florida has been taken out of the primary vote for President, meaning that the January 29th election thing may not happen, and the kids may not be able to get their 24 hours of community service!

Florida has been warned before that the FL delegate won’t count if FL holds their presidential primaries in January, but FL didn’t listen, and now the Democratic and Republican Party Committee thingys are invalidating our votes.

This could be a big story, yeah? FL votes uncounted for, students won’t community service, FL always in some kind of presidential election scandal, etc, etc!

Let me know if you would want to write about this. It kind of ties in with the article you already arote. Ask Mr. Weiss about this too.

    Hey guys-

I came up with a news story for Alessia since it ties in with an article she already wrote. I’m going to look for more leads on Monday, but still post up the ideas that you came up with last Friday, and we’ll go from there.

    Thanks, guys!

Hey guys, check out my blog for a NEWS SECTION update. I would post it up to your blogs, but I feel that I’ve taken over your “Leave A Note Page” with super long messages l0l! :-)

  • robertar2008 // Wednesday, November 21st, 2007 at 7:15 pm |

    Hey Alessia…

If you don’t want to do the presidential election, you can write about Dr.Sidener taking 10-15% from clubs and sports.

Just let me know…youu’re going to have to ask Sidener if this is out of the ordinary (has this always been done in previous years?) and if there are special circumstances, then this could be a big story.

Let me know ASAP how you want to do this!

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
